PTE General Has Been Retired
What replaced it, and which PTE test you need now
If you were sent here to book PTE General, stop before you pay for anything. Pearson no longer offers that test. Below is what took its place and how to work out which of the current tests your situation actually calls for.
PTE General is no longer part of Pearson’s test range. Its page on the official PTE site now redirects to the homepage. The name appears nowhere in their current test list.
What Pearson offers today is PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Core and the PTE Home tests at A1, A2 and B1.

Which test do you actually need?
Work backwards from what you are applying for. The test is chosen by the destination, never by your level, and picking on level is how people end up sitting the wrong one.
Test purposes as described by Pearson, the test owner. The requirement itself is set by the university, employer or immigration authority receiving it, and those change. Confirm yours before you pay an exam fee.
PTE Core, the closest replacement
PTE Core is a general English test, as opposed to an academic one, and Canada recognises it for immigration and citizenship. If your reason for looking at PTE General was general English rather than university entry, this is where you land.
It is a newer test, which has two practical consequences.
Both of those are reasons to prepare with someone who has read the current format rather than to rely on whatever ranks first in a search.
I already have a PTE General certificate
A qualification you already hold does not stop existing because the test was withdrawn. Whether anyone will still accept it is a different question, and only the receiving institution can answer it.
Two practical points.
- Ask the university, employer or authority directly, in writing, before you assume it counts. Some accept retired qualifications indefinitely, others apply a validity window of about two years
- If it is not accepted, do not just book the nearest equivalent. Go back to the decision list above, because the right replacement depends on where you are applying rather than on what you sat before

A screenshot of the university page or the immigration guidance is more useful in a first session than anything else you could bring, because half the people who arrive here believing they need one test in fact need another.

Is PTE General still available?
No. Pearson has retired it, its page on the official PTE site now redirects to the homepage, and the name does not appear in their current test range. What they offer today is PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Core, and the PTE Home tests at A1, A2 and B1.
What replaced PTE General?
There is no single replacement, because the old test served several purposes. PTE Core covers general English and is recognised by Canada for immigration and citizenship. PTE Academic covers university admission and Australian and New Zealand visas. UK visa routes use PTE Academic UKVI or PTE Home.
What is PTE Core?
A general English test from Pearson, as distinct from an academic one, recognised by the Canadian government for immigration and citizenship applications. It is the closest current equivalent to what people used to sit PTE General for, and it is a comparatively new test.
Is my old PTE General certificate still valid?
The qualification still exists, but whether it is accepted is decided by whoever is receiving it. Ask them directly and in writing. Some bodies accept retired qualifications indefinitely, while others apply a validity window of roughly two years from the test date.
Which PTE test do I need for Canada?
PTE Core is the Pearson test recognised by the Canadian government for immigration and citizenship. PTE Academic is not the one for that route. Check the current requirement on the official Canadian immigration pages before booking, since accepted tests do change.
Do you teach PTE Core in the UAE?
Yes, one to one and online across every emirate, alongside PTE Academic. Bring the actual requirement to the first session rather than just the test name, because a good share of people arrive convinced they need one test when their route asks for another.
The four current PTE tests, side by side
One retired test, four live ones, and they are not ranked by difficulty. Each exists for a different destination, which is the only thing that should decide your choice.

Notice that PTE Home is speaking and listening only. People applying on a UK family route sometimes spend months preparing reading and writing they will never be tested on.
How PTE Core actually differs from PTE Academic
Most advice you will find online is about PTE Academic with the word Core pasted over it. The two tests share several task types, and Core has some that Academic does not have at all.
The difference is the register. Academic asks you to retell a lecture. Core asks you to handle a situation at work.
Tasks that exist in Core and not in Academic
What carries over
Read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, answer short question, summarise written text and write from dictation all appear in both. If you have prepared for Academic, that work is not wasted.
Write from dictation is still the highest value item per second in either test.

Both tests are scored on the same 10 to 90 scale. The PTE overview page explains what those numbers translate to.
Why this matters more than a name change
A retired test is not just an administrative footnote. It leaves a trail of advice that is now wrong, and that advice still ranks.
Three practical consequences worth knowing about.
- Old preparation material is still on sale. Books and courses named for the retired test are still listed, and some of the content maps onto nothing you will sit
- Forum advice is unreliable. Threads written before the change describe a test that no longer runs, and they rarely carry a date that makes that obvious
- Some agents have not updated their pages. If a provider is still selling the retired test by name, that tells you something about how current the rest of their advice is
The safest habit is to check the test name against the official Pearson site before paying anyone for anything, including us.
