English Writing Practice for Work
English writing practice built around real workplace emails and reports, with an explanation for every answer. Eight questions, no sign up.
Eight questions on workplace writing, the kind that decides whether your email gets actioned or ignored. Then a short guide to the errors that appear most often in UAE business correspondence.
The five errors that appear most in workplace writing
- Burying the ask. The request appears in the last line of the fourth paragraph. Put it in the first two sentences.
- The passive hiding the actor. "It was decided" leaves the reader wondering by whom. Name the actor unless you are deliberately not naming them.
- Vague deadlines. "At the earliest" and "as soon as possible" mean nothing. Give a date.
- Subject verb disagreement. The single most common grammar error, and the one readers notice.
- Formality mismatch. Over formal openings read as distant, over casual ones read as careless. "Dear" plus surname is safe in almost every UAE context.
All five are structure, not vocabulary. A longer word list touches none of them. Where you go next depends on what the writing is for. A screening test puts these same habits under a clock. An IELTS Task 2 essay asks for the opposite instinct, because there you state the position early and defend it instead of softening it. If it is reports and proposals at work, that is Business English.

Which email opening is right for a first message to a client you have not met?
- AHi mate,
- BDear Ms Karim, correct
- CHello Karim,
- DRespected Madam,
Why: 'Dear' plus title and surname is the standard professional opening. 'Respected Madam' is common in South Asian English but reads as dated in UAE business correspondence.
Rewrite for clarity: 'Please be informed that the meeting has been rescheduled by us to Tuesday.'
- APlease be informed the meeting is rescheduled to Tuesday by us.
- BWe have moved the meeting to Tuesday. correct
- CIt is to be informed that Tuesday is the new meeting.
- DThe meeting, it has been rescheduled to Tuesday.
Why: Active voice, one subject, one verb. 'Please be informed' adds words without adding meaning, and the passive hides who acted.
Which sentence has correct comma use?
- AHowever the deadline has moved.
- BHowever, the deadline has moved. correct
- CHowever the deadline, has moved.
- DHowever; the deadline has moved.
Why: A sentence adverb like 'however' at the start takes a comma after it.
Choose the correct form: The data ___ that demand fell.
- Ashow correct
- Bshows
- Cshowing
- Dis showing
Why: In formal and scientific writing 'data' is plural, so it takes 'show'. In everyday business English 'shows' is widely accepted, but formal reports prefer 'show'.
Which closing suits a request you need answered?
- AThanks.
- BRegards
- CPlease let me know by Thursday if this works. Kind regards, correct
- DAwaiting your positive response at the earliest.
Why: A clear ask with a date, then a standard sign off. 'At the earliest' is vague, and vague deadlines get ignored.
Fix the error: 'The report was reviewed by the team and they has approved it.'
- Athey have approved it correct
- Bthey has approve it
- Cthey had approves it
- Dit has approved by them
Why: 'They' is plural and takes 'have'. Subject verb agreement errors are the most common single error in workplace writing.
Which is the clearest subject line?
- AImportant!!!
- BQuestion
- CInvoice 4471: payment date confirmation needed correct
- DFollowing up on our discussion regarding the matter we spoke about
Why: A subject line should let the reader decide priority without opening the email. Specific reference plus the action needed does that.
Which sentence avoids ambiguity?
- AI sent the file to Ahmed and his manager, who approved it.
- BI sent the file to Ahmed and his manager. His manager approved it. correct
- CI sent it to them and he approved.
- DThe file, sent to Ahmed and manager, approved.
Why: In option A, 'who approved it' could mean the manager or both. Splitting into two sentences removes the ambiguity, which matters when the email is evidence later.
Frequently asked questions
How can I practise English writing on my own?
Write a short email daily and edit it once for length, cutting a quarter of the words without losing meaning. Concision exposes weak grammar faster than writing more does, because every remaining sentence has to carry weight.
What level of formality do UAE workplaces expect?
Moderately formal. 'Dear' plus title and surname for first contact, moving to first names once the other person does. Very formal South Asian conventions and very casual Western ones both read as slightly off here.
Does writing practice improve my speaking?
Indirectly. Writing builds sentence patterns and vocabulary you can reuse, and it lets you notice grammar at your own pace. It does not build fluency, which only improves under real time pressure with correction.
Do you check my writing?
In a one to one class, yes. The teacher works on your own emails and documents rather than textbook exercises, which is usually the fastest route for working professionals.
Practice costs nothing. Feedback does.
A quiz tells you what you got wrong. It cannot tell you why you keep getting it wrong, or fix it. That is what a teacher is for. The demo is AED 30 and includes a level assessment.
