Workplace English Test Practice for UAE Jobs

Practice in the style of a UAE pre employment English screening: instructions, incident reporting, deadlines and professional replies. Eight questions, no sign up.

Eight questions in the style of a pre employment English screening: instructions, reporting, deadlines and professional replies. These are practice questions written by us, not questions from any employer’s actual test.

Large UAE employers, including in the energy sector, commonly screen candidates for workplace English before interview. What they test is rarely grammar for its own sake. It is whether you can follow a written instruction, report a fact clearly, and reply to a manager without ambiguity.

What a workplace English screening actually tests

Not vocabulary breadth. Four things: following written instructions in the right order, reading a deadline correctly, reporting an event factually, and replying professionally when the answer is no.

Instruction sequencing"Prior to", "following", "no later than". Getting the order wrong is a safety finding, not a language slip.
Factual reportingTime, event, consequence. Short sentences. No hedging.
Professional refusalOffering an alternative with a date, rather than a flat no or a vague maybe.
Gulf English habits"Revert" for "reply", "since three years" for "for three years". Understood locally, marked wrong on a test.

If you are preparing for a screening test and an interview, the interview is usually the harder half. Structured competency panels are standard at large UAE employers, and the format is learnable.

Two of those four are writing, and they go wrong for the same reasons ordinary work email does. The workplace writing set is built from exactly those errors, seen from the other side. One thing worth knowing before you sit a screening: "revert" for "reply" is a regional habit rather than a level problem, which is why a CEFR level test and a screening test can disagree about the same person.

The full set is below, so you can read it without taking the quiz.

  • A supervisor writes: 'Ensure the valve is isolated prior to commencing work.' What must happen first?

    • AStart the work
    • BIsolate the valve correct
    • CInform the supervisor
    • DTest the valve

Why: 'Prior to commencing' means before starting. Instruction sequencing is the most commonly tested comprehension skill in workplace screening.

  • Which sentence reports an incident most clearly?

    • AThere was some issue with the pump maybe yesterday.
    • BThe pump failed at 14:30 on Tuesday. No injuries. Line stopped for 40 minutes. correct
    • CPump problem happened and it was stopped.
    • DYesterday the pump, it was not working properly at all.

Why: Incident reporting needs time, event, consequence, in short factual sentences. Vague reporting is a safety issue, not just a language one.

  • 'The shipment is due to arrive no later than Thursday.' This means:

    • AIt will arrive after Thursday
    • BIt may arrive on Friday
    • CThursday is the latest acceptable day correct
    • DIt arrives only on Thursday

Why: 'No later than' sets a deadline, not an exact date. It can arrive earlier, but not after.

  • Choose the correct form: All personnel ___ required to wear PPE in this area.

    • Ais
    • Bare correct
    • Cwas
    • Dhas

Why: 'Personnel' is a plural collective noun and takes 'are'. This is a frequent error in safety notices.

  • Which is the most appropriate reply to a manager's request you cannot meet?

    • ANo.
    • BI can't do it.
    • CI can complete it by Wednesday rather than Monday. Would that work? correct
    • DMaybe, I will see.

Why: A professional refusal offers an alternative and a specific date. A flat no closes the conversation, and a vague maybe creates a second problem later.

  • 'Please revert with the details.' In international English this is best replaced by:

    • APlease revert back
    • BPlease reply with the details correct
    • CPlease return the details
    • DPlease revert the details

Why: 'Revert' meaning 'reply' is common in South Asian and Gulf business English but reads oddly to other English speakers, where 'revert' means 'go back to a previous state'.

  • A form asks for your 'notice period'. This is:

    • AHow long you have worked there
    • BHow much warning you must give before leaving correct
    • CYour probation length
    • DYour annual leave

Why: Notice period is the time between resigning and finishing. It appears on almost every UAE job application and is regularly misread.

  • Which sentence is grammatically correct?

    • AHe has been working here since three years.
    • BHe has been working here for three years. correct
    • CHe is working here since three years.
    • DHe works here from three years.

Why: 'For' takes a duration, 'since' takes a starting point. 'Since three years' is one of the most common errors in Gulf workplace English.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real questions from an employer's English test?

No. These are practice questions we wrote in the style of a workplace English screening. We do not publish any employer's actual test content, and any site claiming to have it should be treated with suspicion.

What English level do UAE employers screen for?

Most professional roles look for roughly CEFR B2: you can follow a meeting, read a procedure and write an unambiguous email. Technical and supervisory roles often weight written reporting more heavily than conversation.

Why is 'since three years' wrong?

'Since' takes a starting point, as in 'since 2022'. 'For' takes a duration, as in 'for three years'. It is understood everywhere in the Gulf, which is exactly why it survives, but it is marked wrong on a test.

Is 'please revert' incorrect?

Not incorrect, but regionally specific. In South Asian and Gulf business English it means 'please reply'. Elsewhere 'revert' means to return to a previous state, so international colleagues may misread it. 'Please reply' is safer.

How do I prepare for the interview after the test?

Structured competency interviews follow a predictable shape: a situation, the action you took, the result. Practising that out loud is what improves it, which is what our interview preparation course covers.

Practice costs nothing. Feedback does.

A quiz tells you what you got wrong. It cannot tell you why you keep getting it wrong, or fix it. That is what a teacher is for. The demo is AED 30 and includes a level assessment.
