What Are the American English Classes at WizMantra UAE?

They're live online classes with one tutor and one learner, 30 minutes at a time, Monday to Friday at a slot you keep, focused on American pronunciation, rhythm, vocabulary and the way US meetings and emails run. You start with an AED 30 demo that includes a short accent and level check on your own speech, and the fee is quoted in AED after it.

What makes American English different?

Mostly sound, then vocabulary, then style. Grammar is nearly identical to British English, so the course spends its time where the differences actually are.

AreaAmericanBritish
The r soundPronounced after vowels: car, waterOften silent: car, water
The t between vowelsSoft, like a quick d: water, betterClear t
Vowel in "dance", "ask"Short a, as in catLong a, as in father
Vocabularyapartment, check, vacationflat, bill, holiday
Spellingcolor, organize, centercolour, organise, centre

Style matters more than people expect. American meetings tend to open with a quick personal line, get to the point fast and close with a clear next step. Emails are shorter. "Quite good" reads as lukewarm to an American manager, while "pretty good" or "really solid" lands the way you meant it.

Who needs American English in the UAE?

People whose work runs on US time or US clients: tech and SaaS teams, US company regional offices in Dubai Internet City, customer support for American accounts, and students heading to US universities.

For most of them the goal isn't to sound American. It's to be understood the first time on a US call, and to stop being asked to repeat.

The work side has numbers behind it. In Cambridge English and QS research covering 5,373 employers in 38 countries, about half said they offer a better starting package to applicants with good English, and English skills were linked to faster promotion (Cambridge English, English at Work). On a team that reports to New York or Seattle, the person who explains a problem clearly on the 6 pm GST call is the one who gets noticed.

Students have a different target. TOEFL iBT now reports scores on a 1 to 6 scale aligned to CEFR, and for a transition period score reports also show a comparable 0 to 120 score (ETS, TOEFL score scale update). If a US university is the plan, pair this course with TOEFL preparation so the accent work and the exam tasks pull the same way.

Should you work on accent or clarity?

Clarity, nearly always. Stress and rhythm (which syllable you hit, and how you group words) affect understanding more than individual sounds. We made that argument in clear English at work is not about your accent. The course works on rhythm and stress first, then the sounds that cause the most misunderstandings.

Here's a quick test. Say "I didn't say he stole the money" seven times, stressing a different word each time. Each version means something different. A listener in Chicago reads all of that from stress alone, and most of the "sorry, can you repeat that?" moments on US calls come from stress landing in the wrong place more often than from the accent itself.

Which American sounds trip up UAE speakers?

It depends on your first language, and in a UAE office that could be one of dozens. The patterns are predictable, which is good news, because a tutor can go straight to them.

  • Arabic speakers often swap p and b ("bark" for "park") and f and v, because Arabic has no separate p or v. A rolled r is common too, where American English wants a soft r with the tongue pulled back.
  • Hindi and Urdu speakers tend to merge v and w ("wery" for "very"), use a hard t and d where American English uses a soft flap in "water", and give every syllable the same weight, which flattens English rhythm.
  • Malayalam and Tamil speakers often add a small y or w sound before vowels at the start of words and stress the first syllable of words like "develop" and "hotel".
  • Tagalog speakers often mix p and f, and b and v, because Filipino doesn't separate them, and may give the short i in "ship" the long sound of "sheep".

None of this is a flaw. It's the sound system of a language you already speak well, carried into English. That's why the course starts with your two or three most frequent patterns rather than a textbook list of every sound. For a wider look at how English errors split by first language, see the online English classes hub.

What does a 30 minute class look like?

It starts with you talking. The tutor needs to hear your patterns before fixing anything, so the first session includes a short recording of you reading and speaking freely.

  • A short recording of you reading and speaking, so the tutor hears your patterns.
  • Two or three target sounds or stress patterns per week, drilled in real sentences.
  • Meeting language: updates, pushing back, asking for clarification, the American way.
  • A recording and notes after each class, so you can practise the same sentences later.

A typical class after that: five minutes replaying one sentence from last time to check it stuck. Ten minutes on one pattern, say the soft t, inside sentences you'd really say at work ("I'll get a better estimate later today"). Ten minutes on a role play, a client call or a stand-up update, where the tutor listens for the pattern under pressure. The rest goes on notes and one task for tomorrow.

Classes run Monday to Friday at a fixed slot in Gulf Standard Time. Short daily contact suits accent work better than one long weekly session, because the new habit gets used again before the old one creeps back.

How do you practise American English between classes?

Shadowing, mostly. Pick 20 seconds of a US speaker you'd like to sound like, a podcast host or a product demo, and repeat it a half second behind them, copying the stress and the pauses as well as the words.

  • Record yourself reading the same three sentences each morning and compare with last week.
  • Mark the stressed syllable in every new word you learn: deVELop, PHOtograph, phoTOgraphy.
  • Change one meeting habit: open your next update with the main point, then the detail.
  • Watch one short US news clip a day with English subtitles, then again without.

American or British English: which should you learn in the UAE?

Pick by who you talk to. You'll hear both here: tech, sales and support teams working with US accounts live in American English all day, while plenty of other UAE offices mix the two. Either is correct. What matters is being consistent and being understood.

Spelling follows the same rule. If your company writes color and organize, write that way everywhere, including the CV you send a US employer. Mixing colour and color in one email looks careless to any reader who notices.

If your goal is general fluency rather than American English, Advance English or Business English is the better fit. Preparing for a US company interview? Add interview preparation. Presenting to a US leadership team? Public speaking coaching goes deeper on delivery.
