What Is Intermediate English at WizMantra UAE?
It's a live one to one course for people at CEFR B1 to B2 who can hold a conversation but lose it in meetings, on calls and in longer explanations. Classes are 30 minutes, Monday to Friday, online at a slot you keep in Gulf Standard Time. The AED 30 demo checks your level before you pay for a plan.
What does Intermediate actually mean?
It means CEFR B1 to B2. On the Council of Europe scale, B1 is the point where you can deal with most situations at work and describe experiences, and B2 is where you can argue a point and keep up with fast native speech without strain. Intermediate English is the climb between the two, and it's the longest climb on the scale.
In UAE terms, B1 is the site engineer in Abu Dhabi who can explain a delay to the client but goes quiet when the client pushes back. It's the nurse in Sharjah who handles patients fine and dreads the handover meeting with consultants. B2 is when that pushback and that meeting stop being a problem.
How long does it take to get from B1 to B2?
Several months, for most adults. Cambridge English puts B1 at roughly 350 to 400 guided learning hours from zero and B2 at 500 to 600 (Cambridge guided learning hours). The gap is around 150 to 200 hours.
People who expect a one month fix tend to be disappointed. People who expect steady, audible change month to month usually aren't. A month of weekday classes gives you about ten hours with a teacher. What you do with the recordings in between decides how fast the rest goes.
There's a quiet upside here. Most intermediate learners in the UAE already use English all day at work, so the practice hours are there. They just aren't being corrected. Turning those hours into useful practice is half the job.
Why do intermediate speakers plateau?
Because they can get by. Once you can survive a meeting, nobody corrects you any more, so the same errors repeat for years: missing articles, present tense for everything, the same four linking words.
- Fluency without range. You speak fast but with a small set of words, so you sound vaguer than you are.
- Grammar that holds in writing and breaks in speech. Conditionals and passives are fine on paper and vanish under pressure.
- Listening at the wrong speed. You follow your manager, then lose the client who speaks twice as fast.
- First language patterns that never got fixed. Hindi and Urdu speakers still say "since two years". Arabic speakers still add a pronoun ("the report that I sent it"). Malayalam and Tamil speakers still ask "why you didn't come?". Tagalog speakers still swap he and she.
One to one classes break the plateau because someone finally notices the patterns and stops you on them, every time, until they change.
What does an intermediate class look like?
Less teaching, more talking under pressure. At this level you already know most of the rules, so the class is built to make you use them when it's hard.
A typical half hour: you bring something from your week, say a status update you have to give on Thursday. You give it. The teacher interrupts with the questions your manager would ask. Then you get three corrections, not ten, each with a better version of the sentence, and you give the update again.
- Two minute talks on topics you didn't prepare, to build range.
- Role plays where the other side disagrees, so you practise holding a point.
- Rewrites of a real email you sent, with the reasons behind each change.
- A recording and written notes afterwards, so the corrections don't evaporate.
If one part of your English is clearly weaker than the rest, the teacher will say so. Writing gets its own help in the English writing classes, and pure grammar work fits the one to one grammar classes.
Listening to the accents you actually hear
A UAE office isn't one accent. In a single morning you might have a British line manager, an Egyptian client, a Filipino colleague and a supplier calling from Mumbai. Intermediate learners often follow one of those easily and lose another completely, and it's rarely the grammar that's the problem. It's speed, linking and stress.
So listening work at this level uses short clips and real speech at natural speed, then slows down the part you missed. You learn to catch the stressed words and guess the rest, which is what fluent listeners do anyway. Once that clicks, phone calls get noticeably easier, because there's no face to read on a call.
Does Intermediate English pay off at work in the UAE?
Often, yes. In the Cambridge English and QS English at Work survey of 5,373 employers in 38 countries, about half said they offer a better starting package to applicants with good English. Over two thirds of employers in non-English-speaking countries said English matters for their organisation.
In the UAE the effect shows up in small moments. The engineer who can push back on a variation order in a site meeting in Musaffah. The accountant in DIFC who explains a variance to a finance director without reading from notes. The sales rep in Deira who keeps the client talking instead of losing them at the second question. That's B2 at work, and it's the most common reason people book this course.
If the goal is narrower, there are shorter routes. Business English focuses on meetings, email and negotiation. Interview preparation works on one panel at a time.
How do you know you're ready for Advance?
When you can hold a 20 minute discussion with a stranger on an unfamiliar topic, disagree politely, and hear your own errors as you make them. At that point Advance English is the better spend. A simpler check: record yourself explaining your job for three minutes, then listen back. If you can spot most of your own mistakes, you're close. If basic sentences still take effort, Basic English will move you faster.
Presentations are a separate skill. Plenty of B2 speakers still freeze in front of a room, and public speaking coaching deals with that directly.
How can you practise between classes when you work long hours?
Use the English you already speak at work, on purpose. You don't need extra hours. You need to notice what you say.
- Pick one correction from the last class and use it in a real meeting the same day.
- Before a call, say your first two sentences out loud once. It takes ten seconds.
- Replay five minutes of the recording on the drive home.
- Once a week, try the workplace English test to see what's improving.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions from UAE learners who are past the basics and trying to work out whether Intermediate is the right step.
1Who is the Intermediate English course for?
People who can already hold a conversation but lose fluency when it matters: a meeting, a client call, a longer explanation. On the CEFR scale that's roughly B1 to B2.
2How much does Intermediate English cost in the UAE?
AED 613 for one month or AED 1,225 for two, for live one to one classes online. Three months is on request. Full details are on the AED fee list.
3How do I know I'm Intermediate and not Basic or Advance?
4What does the course cover?
Fluency work, advanced grammar such as tenses, passives, connectives and conditionals, spontaneous speaking, situational conversations and presentation practice. The teacher builds the order around your own mistakes.
5Are the classes one to one?
Yes. Every session is you and one teacher, online, at a fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time.
6Do I get anything after each class?
Yes: a recording and written notes after each session, plus practice tasks built from the errors you made in it.
7How long does Intermediate take?
It depends on where you start and how much you practise between classes. As a rough guide, Cambridge English estimates 150 to 200 guided hours between B1 and B2, so plan in months rather than weeks.
8Is Intermediate English useful for IELTS?
Yes. Most IELTS targets of 6 to 7 sit around B2. If you have a test date, the IELTS course adds exam technique on top.
