Duolingo English Test: Practice and Format Guide

Practice on the Duolingo English Test format, scoring from 10 to 160, and how it compares with IELTS for UAE applicants. Seven questions, no sign up.

Seven questions on how the Duolingo English Test actually works, its scoring, and the mistakes that cost people a valid result. Useful before you book, since the test cannot be paused once it starts.

Duolingo English Test, in short

About an hour, taken online at home, adaptive, scored 10 to 160, with results usually back within two days. It is accepted by a growing number of universities including several in the UAE, though acceptance is never universal and you must check the specific institution.

SpeedAn hour, versus about three for IELTS, and results in days rather than weeks.
CostSubstantially cheaper than IELTS or TOEFL in most markets. Check current pricing on the official site.
WhereAt home, with a webcam. No test centre booking and no travel.
The catchAcceptance varies. For UAE work visas and many immigration routes, IELTS is still the required test.

The honest advice: if your target institution accepts it, the DET is faster and cheaper. If you need a score for a visa, or your university lists only IELTS, take IELTS. Verify with the institution before you pay for either.

There is a third door people forget. PTE is also computer marked and also quick, and if you speak clearly but pause to think, the choice between the three tests matters more than another month of revision. Whichever one you land on, start with the part carrying the most weight. For IELTS that is Writing Task 2, worth two thirds of the writing band.

The full set is below, so you can read it without taking the quiz.

  • How long does the Duolingo English Test take?

    • AAbout 1 hour correct
    • BAbout 2 hours
    • CAbout 3 hours
    • DAbout 30 minutes

Why: It runs about an hour including setup, which is its main appeal against IELTS and TOEFL. It is taken online rather than at a test centre.

  • What does 'adaptive' mean in this test?

    • AYou choose the difficulty
    • BQuestions get harder or easier based on your answers correct
    • CYou can retake any question
    • DIt adapts to your accent

Why: An adaptive test adjusts difficulty as you go, which is why it can place you accurately in fewer questions than a fixed test.

  • In the 'read and complete' task, what is being assessed?

    • AReading speed only
    • BSpelling and grammar in context correct
    • CPronunciation
    • DListening

Why: You fill in missing letters in a passage, which tests whether you can predict words from context and spell them correctly.

  • What is the score range?

    • A0 to 9
    • B10 to 160 correct
    • C0 to 120
    • D1 to 100

Why: The Duolingo English Test is scored from 10 to 160 in five point increments, unlike the IELTS 0 to 9 band scale.

  • Roughly what DET score corresponds to IELTS 6.5?

    • AAbout 75
    • BAbout 105 to 115 correct
    • CAbout 140
    • DAbout 60

Why: Around 105 to 115 is the range usually treated as comparable to IELTS 6.5, though every institution sets its own requirement. Always check the specific university.

  • Which behaviour can invalidate your test?

    • APausing to think
    • BLooking away from the screen repeatedly correct
    • CSpeaking slowly
    • DAsking for extra time

Why: The test is proctored by recording and automated review. Repeatedly looking off screen, or anyone else appearing, can void the result.

  • What should you do in the speaking tasks if you finish early?

    • AStop and wait
    • BKeep developing the answer until time ends correct
    • CRepeat what you said
    • DSay you are finished

Why: Like IELTS speaking, the scoring needs enough language to assess. Using the full time with relevant content scores better than stopping early.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Duolingo English Test?

About one hour including setup, taken online at home rather than at a test centre. Results usually arrive within two days, compared with up to two weeks for a paper based IELTS.

What is a good Duolingo English Test score?

It depends entirely on where you are applying. As a rough guide, 105 to 115 is often treated as comparable to IELTS 6.5, and 120 and above to IELTS 7. Always check the institution's own requirement rather than a conversion chart.

Is the Duolingo test accepted in the UAE?

By a growing number of universities, but not universally, and generally not for work visa purposes where IELTS remains standard. Confirm with the specific university or authority before booking.

Can I retake it?

Yes, and there is a waiting period between attempts. Because the test is adaptive and cheaper than IELTS, retaking is a more realistic option than with a test centre exam.

How should I prepare?

Practise the task types rather than general English, because the formats are unusual: read and complete, listen and type, and short spoken responses. Fluency work helps the speaking sections most.

Practice costs nothing. Feedback does.

A quiz tells you what you got wrong. It cannot tell you why you keep getting it wrong, or fix it. That is what a teacher is for. The demo is AED 30 and includes a level assessment.
