Who is Basic English for?

Adults at CEFR A1 to A2. You understand more than you can say, you build sentences in your head before speaking, and phone calls are the worst part. On the CEFR global scale, A2 means handling routine tasks that need a simple, direct exchange of information.

In the UAE that looks like this: you can manage at the supermarket, but explaining a problem to a bank teller, a clinic receptionist or your manager still takes enormous effort. Maybe you nod along in a meeting in Business Bay and answer later on WhatsApp, because typing gives you time. Maybe your child's school in Sharjah sends notes home and you read them twice.

Most people who join aren't true beginners. They studied English at school in Kerala, Cairo, Manila or Lahore, then spent years speaking something else at home and at work. The words are in there somewhere. What's missing is practice saying them out loud, quickly, to a real person.

What will you be able to say after the first month?

Short, correct answers in the situations you meet every week. Here's a realistic list for 30 minute classes on weekdays plus a little practice:

• Introduce yourself and talk about your job and family without notes.
• Ask for and give directions, prices and times.
• Handle a simple phone call: booking, rescheduling, asking a question.
• Use past and future forms correctly in short answers, which is where most beginners slip.

Those are honest targets. They aren't fluency. Fluency is several levels away, and anyone promising it in four weeks is selling something. What a month does give you is a handful of sentences you can say without fear, and that changes how the next month goes.

How many hours does it take to reach A2?

Roughly 180 to 200 guided learning hours from zero, according to Cambridge English (Cambridge guided learning hours). Treat that as a guide. It counts teaching time, and it assumes you're starting with nothing.

Most adults who join already have school English, so they're not starting from zero. They're reactivating it. A month of weekday classes is about ten hours with the teacher. Add fifteen minutes a day of replaying the recording and saying the corrected sentences, and the practice time roughly doubles.

That's why the plans run one, two or three months. One month gets you moving. Three months gives a returner more room to settle at A2 before moving up to Intermediate English.

Basic or Intermediate: a quick test

Try this. Explain, out loud and without stopping, why you were late to work last Tuesday. If you can do it in rough sentences with a few mistakes, you're probably near the top of A2 or already at B1. If you stop after one sentence to search for the past tense of the verb, Basic is the right place. Neither answer is a problem. It just tells the teacher where to start.

Why do beginners freeze, and what does a 30 minute class do about it?

Mostly it's fear of the mistake, and it gets worse the longer you avoid speaking. A beginner class breaks that by making mistakes normal from minute one.

Here's a typical class. The teacher sets up something small and real: ordering a cake for a birthday, telling a pharmacist in Ajman what's wrong, asking HR when your visa papers will be ready. You try it. The teacher stops you at the two errors that matter, gives you the correct sentence, and you say it again. Then once more, a bit faster.

Thirty minutes sounds short. For a beginner it's about right. Longer sessions tire you out and the last twenty minutes don't stick. Five short classes a week also means you speak English five days running, and that rhythm is what makes it start to feel normal.

• A level check in your first session, so the class is pitched where you are.
• Two new words and two phrases a day by email, small enough to remember.
• A recording and written notes after each class.
• Grammar taught inside the sentences you need, one point at a time.

Which beginner mistakes come from your first language?

Most of them, and that's good news, because it makes them predictable. Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog and Malayalam speakers each bring different habits into English, and your teacher works on the ones you actually make.

• Arabic speakers often drop the verb be ("he teacher"), and mix p and b because Arabic has no separate p sound. "Bark the car" for park the car is a classic.
• Hindi and Urdu speakers often use the present continuous for everything ("I am knowing") and leave out a and the.
• Malayalam and Tamil speakers often keep statement order in questions ("where you are going?").
• Tagalog speakers mix he and she, because Filipino uses one word, siya, for both.

None of this means you're bad at English. It's your first language showing through, and it fades with targeted practice. For Arabic speakers there's a free quiz on the most common errors you can take before the demo.

Can you fit Basic English around a UAE work shift or a family day?

Yes, if you pick a slot you can protect. Classes run Monday to Friday at a fixed time in Gulf Standard Time, and you choose that time before you start.

People fit it in very different ways. A retail supervisor in Al Ain might take the class before a split shift. A driver in Ras Al Khaimah might take it at home after the last trip. A mother in Mirdif might take it once the children have left for school, which is exactly who the English course for homemakers is written for.

What doesn't work is a class squeezed into a parked car between errands. You can join from a phone, but a quiet room and headphones make a bigger difference than most people expect.

What should you do between classes?

Ten minutes a day, out loud. Reading the notes silently feels productive and does very little.

• Replay the last recording and repeat each corrected sentence twice.
• Use the two daily words in a sentence about your own day.
• Say one thing in English you would normally say in your first language: a greeting at work, a question at the shop.
• Once a week, try a short quiz on the English practice tests page.
