IELTS in Dubai: Fees, Test Centres and How to Book
IELTS in Dubai costs AED 1,470 at IDP for Academic or General Training on computer, or AED 1,620 if you write on paper. Both IDP and the British Council run official centres in the city, and you book directly on the provider’s own site. Nothing on this page is booked through us.
IELTS exam fees in the UAE
The fee is set by the test provider. No preparation centre, including us, can discount it, and anyone advertising a cheaper official IELTS should be treated with suspicion.
| Test | Fee | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Academic or General Training Computer, writing on computer | AED 1,470 | The standard, and the cheapest full test |
| Academic or General Training Computer, writing on paper | AED 1,620 | If you write better by hand |
| IELTS for UKVI | AED 1,570 | UK visa and immigration routes only |
| IELTS Life Skills | AED 750 | UK family and settlement visas, A1 or B1 speaking and listening only |
| One Skill Retake | AED 962 | Retaking one section, computer |
| One Skill Retake, paper writing | AED 1,020 | As above, writing on paper |
| One Skill Retake UKVI | AED 990 | UKVI candidates retaking one section |

Where you can sit IELTS in the UAE
IDP and the British Council both operate official centres in Dubai. Testing also runs across the other emirates, so you do not have to travel into Dubai if somewhere closer has a date that suits you.
| Emirate or city | Testing available |
|---|---|
| Dubai | Yes, both providers. IDP lists a Sheikh Zayed Road centre |
| Abu Dhabi | Yes, both providers |
| Sharjah | Yes |
| Al Ain | Yes |
| Ajman | Yes |
| Ras Al Khaimah | Yes |
| Fujairah, Khorfakkan and Dibba | Yes, on the east coast |
Locations listed by IDP IELTS UAE, September 2026. Availability varies by date and test type, so check before assuming your nearest city has your test.
Two practical points. Dates near university intake deadlines can fill early, so book earlier than feels necessary. And if you live outside Dubai, check the nearer centres before defaulting to the city, because an early morning test in Dubai means leaving home very early.
IDP or British Council: does it matter?
Not for your score. Both are official IELTS providers, and the test and the marking are identical. Anyone telling you one is easier is guessing. Each provider sets its own fee, though, so compare both before you book.
What actually differs is logistics: which centre is easier to reach, and who has a date that fits your deadline. Choose on that.
Same test
Identical questions, identical band descriptors, identical certificate. Both are recognised everywhere IELTS is accepted.
Same standard fee
IDP charges AED 1,470 for the computer test. The British Council sets its own fee, so compare the two on the day you book.
Different dates
Availability is the real difference. Check both before booking if your deadline is tight.
Different locations
Pick the centre you can reach calmly on the morning. Arriving stressed costs you more than any provider difference.
Academic or General Training: which do you need?
Academic is for university admission and most professional registration. General Training is for migration, work visas and some vocational study. Reading and writing differ between them; listening and speaking are the same.
| You need | Take |
|---|---|
| University admission, in the UAE or abroad | Academic |
| Professional registration, for example healthcare or engineering | Usually Academic, confirm with the regulator |
| Permanent residency or migration, for example Canada or Australia | General Training |
| A UK visa | IELTS for UKVI, and check which module the visa route requires |
| UK family or settlement visa | IELTS Life Skills at the level the route specifies |
The differences between the two modules, and what each one asks you to do, are covered on our IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training pages.
How to book, and what to take with you
- Book on the provider's own site. IDP and the British Council both take bookings directly. You do not need an agent and you should not pay one a fee to do it for you.
- Use the same ID you will bring. Your passport or Emirates ID number on the booking must match the document you present on the day, exactly.
- Bring that same document. No document, no test, and no refund. It is the easiest way to lose the fee.
- Arrive early. Latecomers can be refused entry. Dubai traffic is not accepted as a reason.
- Results. IDP releases computer results in 1 to 5 days and paper results in 13 days for tests taken in the UAE. Check the timeline against your application deadline before choosing a format.
One Skill Retake, the option most people miss
If you scored well overall but missed your target in a single skill, you can retake just that section rather than the whole test. It costs AED 962 on computer instead of AED 1,470, and IDP says it must be booked and sat within 60 days of your original test. If you are half a band short in writing, this is the cheaper route to the score.
How long to prepare
There is no fixed rate at which a band moves. As a reference point, Cambridge English puts one CEFR level at roughly 200 guided learning hours, and on IELTS’s own comparison a CEFR level spans more than one band. So a full band is a matter of months, not weeks. If your test is in two weeks, work on exam technique rather than trying to raise your English level.
Reading and listening reward practice you can do alone. Speaking and writing need someone to tell you what is wrong, which is the part that does not improve from doing more mock tests by yourself.
IELTS coaching in Dubai
We do not sell the exam. We prepare you for it, one to one and online. IELTS General Training or Academic is AED 1,038 a month. The Adhoc course, at AED 862, is for anyone who has already sat the test and needs one or two bands lifted.
Full pricing is on the AED fees page, and the course itself is on the IELTS preparation page. The demo class is AED 30 and includes a level assessment. For IELTS candidates that is the useful part, because it tells you whether your target band is realistic in the time you have.
Questions
IELTS in Dubai
Common questions from learners in Dubai, answered.
1How much is the IELTS exam in Dubai?
IDP lists AED 1,470 for IELTS Academic or General Training taken on computer, and AED 1,620 if you write on paper. IELTS for UKVI is AED 1,570 and IELTS Life Skills is AED 750. Fees are set by the test provider, not by preparation centres.
2Which is the cheapest IELTS option in Dubai?
At IDP, the computer-based test at AED 1,470 is the lowest standard fee, AED 150 less than writing on paper. The British Council sets its own fee, so compare both. If you only need to improve one skill, One Skill Retake at IDP costs AED 962.
3Where are the IELTS test centres in Dubai?
Both IDP and the British Council run authorised centres in Dubai, with IDP listing a Sheikh Zayed Road location. Testing also runs in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Khorfakkan and Dibba. Check the official centre finders for current dates before you book.
4Is IDP or British Council better for IELTS in Dubai?
Neither, for your score. Both are official providers, and the test content and marking are identical. Each sets its own fee, so compare the two, then choose on test date availability and which centre is easier to reach on the morning.
5Should I take IELTS Academic or General Training?
Academic is for university admission and most professional registration. General Training is for migration, work visas and some vocational courses. Taking the wrong one means paying the full fee twice, so confirm in writing with the body asking for your score.
6What is One Skill Retake?
If you need a higher score in only one of the four skills, you can retake just that section instead of the whole test. At IDP it costs AED 962 on computer, and it must be booked and sat within 60 days of your original test.
7How long should I prepare for IELTS?
It depends on the gap, but plan in months, not weeks, for a full band. Cambridge English puts one CEFR level at roughly 200 guided learning hours, and a CEFR level spans more than one IELTS band. If your test is in two weeks, practise exam technique instead.
Find out if your target band is realistic
The AED 30 demo is a level assessment with a teacher. For IELTS candidates, that assessment is the point. It tells you whether the band you need is reachable before your test date, or whether you should move the date.
