Is PTE harder than IELTS?
No, and it is not easier either. It is harder in different places, which is the part nobody tells you before you book.
PTE is marked by an algorithm. IELTS is marked by a person.
That single difference reshuffles the whole test. An examiner forgives a stumble because they can hear that you recovered. Software cannot hear recovery, only the gap. So a candidate with excellent English and a hesitant delivery often scores lower on PTE than on IELTS, while a candidate with ordinary English and a confident, even rhythm scores higher.

So the honest answer to which one to sit is not about difficulty. It is about whether you perform better to a microphone or to a face, and how soon you need the result.

The score you actually need
PTE Academic is scored 10 to 90 and has no pass mark. The only number that matters is the one set by the body receiving it, and for most people in the Emirates that is Australian skilled migration.
The gap between 65 and 79 is where most of the preparation money in this city goes, because those two numbers are worth different points on the skilled migration test.
It is also the gap that takes the longest.

Comparisons with IELTS are approximate concordance, not an official conversion. Band thresholds for Australian visas are set by the Department of Home Affairs and change. Confirm the exact requirement for your visa subclass or university before planning around a number.
Is PTE Academic difficult?
The English is not the difficult part for most candidates who reach us. The clock is, and so is talking to a screen for twenty minutes without a single natural pause.
Four things account for most lost marks, and none of them is vocabulary.
That is a trainable habit rather than a language skill, and breaking it is most of what the first fortnight of coaching actually does.
What happens in the two hours
Three parts, back to back, in one sitting. Speaking and writing are scored together, which catches people out when they plan their revision.

Notice how much crosses over. That is why practising one skill in isolation works badly for this test, and why we drill by task type rather than by skill.

Every task type, and where the marks actually go
PTE Academic has twenty scored task types plus one unscored introduction. Scoring is integrated, so a single task can feed two or three of your reported skills, which is why practising by skill works badly and practising by task works.
Three things matter more than knowing the list.
Part 1: Speaking and Writing
The longest part, and the one that decides most scores. Everything here is spoken into a headset with no one reacting to you.

The four tasks worth most of your practice
Twenty task types is a long list and you do not have time for all of it. If you have a fortnight, these four move the score furthest.
Write from dictation
One sentence. Played once. Typed exactly.
It feeds both listening and writing, which makes it the highest value item per second in the entire test. It is also pure technique rather than English: write the sentence in shorthand while it plays, then reconstruct it. Trying to hold it in your head and type afterwards is how most people lose it.
Partial credit applies, so type every word you caught even when you know one is missing.
Re-order paragraphs
Everyone finds the topic. Almost nobody finds the order in time.
The trick is not reading for meaning. Find the paragraph that could open, which usually names things in full rather than with pronouns, then chain forward on referring words: this, these, such, however, as a result. The logic is grammatical, not thematic.
Describe image
Forty seconds of continuous speech about a chart you have never seen.
You are not scored on insight. You are scored on speaking without stopping, so a fixed opening about what type of image it is, what the axes are, what the highest and lowest points are and one closing line will outscore a thoughtful analysis that dries up at 22 seconds.
Have that shape ready before you sit down.
Summarize written text
One sentence. Between 5 and 75 words.
Two sentences scores zero on form no matter how good the content, and it is the single most common avoidable error in the whole test. Build it as one complex sentence: the main clause carries the central idea, and subordinate clauses carry the supporting ones.
Practise them under a clock from the first session. Untimed practice makes everyone look ready.

The Department of Home Affairs treats PTE 50 as Competent English, 65 as Proficient and 79 as Superior. Proficient and Superior carry points on the skilled migration test, which is why most candidates here target 65 or 79 rather than a general good result.
How long does it take to raise a PTE score?
It depends far more on which tasks are failing than on how many points you need. Moving from 58 to 65 is often a few weeks of task specific drilling, while 65 to 79 usually takes considerably longer because it needs consistency rather than improvement.
Do you book the exam for me?
No, and be wary of anyone who offers to. You book directly with Pearson at an official test centre, which is both cheaper and safer. We prepare you, tell you honestly when you are ready, and take no part in the exam fee.
