How long does it take to learn French?

Longer than an app suggests, shorter than school made it feel. French is one of the closer languages to English: a huge share of English vocabulary came from French after 1066, so you recognise words like gouvernement, restaurant and information from day one.

A practical guide for one to one learners: A1 in a couple of months, A2 by around three, B1 a few months after that, and B2 usually needs a year or more of steady work. Grammar (gender, verb endings, the past tenses) and listening to natural speed French are what slow people down.

Levels follow the Council of Europe CEFR global scale.

What does B1 actually feel like? The Council of Europe describes it as handling the main points of clear, familiar talk about work, school and free time, coping with most travel situations and giving short reasons for your opinions. B2 is a real step up. You follow technical discussion in your own field and keep a conversation going without strain on either side.

Those descriptions matter because they're what DELF tests against. They're also what your tutor checks in the first session. Two adults who both say they did French at school can land a full level apart once they actually speak.

Which French exam do you need in the UAE?

For most adults here it's DELF. The DELF diplomas cover A1, A2, B1 and B2, the DALF covers C1 and C2, and both are issued by the French Ministry of Education through France Education International. Each one tests four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), each marked out of 25. A DELF diploma doesn't expire.

There are separate versions by age: DELF Prim for children of about 7 to 12, DELF Junior for 13 to 17 and DELF tout public for adults. The details are on the France Education International DELF page. In the UAE, Alliance Française Dubai runs the DELF and DALF sessions and describes itself as the only centre in the country accredited for official French certificates, so check its session calendar before you set a target date.

What does a one to one French class look like?

You speak French in the first class. The tutor builds each session around a real situation (introducing yourself at work, booking a table, a TEF style oral task), corrects pronunciation as you go, and gives you a short task for before the next class.

A typical 30 minutes at A1 might go like this. Five minutes of greetings and yesterday's phrases. Ten on one new pattern, say asking for things politely with je voudrais. Ten on a role play where you order at a café in Jumeirah and the tutor plays an impatient waiter. The last few minutes go on the two or three slips that kept coming back.

At B1 and B2 the shape changes. Less drilling, more talking: you summarise a short French news clip, defend an opinion, write a formal email and get it back marked up. That's close to what the DELF speaking and writing papers ask for.

Which French mistakes do UAE learners make most?

Your first language shapes them, and in the UAE that could be almost anything. The good news is the patterns are predictable.

• Arabic speakers usually find the French R easy, since it sits close to the Arabic غ sound. The harder parts are p against b (Arabic has no separate p, so poisson and boisson blur together) and the nasal vowels in vin, vent and bon. Many learners from Lebanon, Morocco, Algeria or Tunisia already have some school French and start above zero.
• Hindi and Urdu speakers already think in masculine and feminine nouns, which helps. The catch is that the genders don't match: a word that's feminine in Hindi can easily be masculine in French. Word order trips people up too: French usually runs subject, verb, object, like English, while Hindi saves the verb for the end.
• English speakers fall for false friends. Actuellement means currently, une librairie is a bookshop and sensible means sensitive. Silent final letters catch everyone in the first month.
• Tagalog speakers often spot more vocabulary than they expect, through the Spanish loanwords Filipino already uses.

How do you fit French around a UAE work week?

By keeping it small and fixed. Thirty minutes is short enough to take before work in Dubai Marina or straight after a shift at the airport, and long enough to get real speaking done.

Classes run Monday to Friday at one slot you choose in Gulf Standard Time. Pick a time you can protect. A class squeezed in from a parked car between meetings is half a class, and a one month plan runs one calendar month from activation, so unused sessions lapse rather than roll over.

Location doesn't change anything. The tutor, syllabus and fee are the same in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah. Nobody drives across an emirate at rush hour for a language class.

How do you keep French going between classes?

Ten minutes a day beats an hour on Saturday. The learners who move fastest treat the recording and notes as homework, and they don't let a full week pass without speaking.

• Replay the last class and repeat each corrected sentence out loud, twice.
• Learn new nouns with their article (le or la) from the start, so gender never has to be fixed later.
• Switch one app on your phone to French. Weather or maps works well.
• Listen to slow French news or a podcast on the commute, even if you catch only a third of it.
• Write three lines a day about your day and bring them to class to be corrected.
