IELTS: Factors on which Candidates Are Assessed
The International English Language Testing System, popularly known as IELTS, is the world’s most renowned study course on English language where command of candidates over the language is measured.
These candidates from all across the globe are those who want to learn the English language and use it while working in various worldwide regions where people speak English. In other language, IELTS can be defined as a test or study program that opens the doors of almost every region for an individual.
It is a test whose major focus is on content where tasks are related to language. The test is a trusted source to learn English as it is designed by experts in the language.
There are four major areas of IELTS- Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. For every area of the test, there are scores given from 1 to 9. The overall average of all the test areas are called band, which decides score of a candidate. During these tests, it has been decided that how fluently a candidate can speak English, accuracy on pronunciation, vocabulary skills and command of the individual over grammar.
In all these processes, a candidate has to be clear about their knowledge about the language as every process comes with a score.
To know about the process in which candidates are assessed, here is some help:
IELTS Evaluation Criteria and Band Scores
Fluency and Consistency
In this step, IELTS examiners assess your control over the English language. They observe how well you structure your answers, the length of your responses, and whether your speech flows naturally with appropriate pauses.
Candidates must focus on answering questions directly without unnecessary elaboration, ensuring they use correct tenses while clearly explaining their ideas.
Pronunciation
Examiners evaluate whether your pronunciation is clear and easy to understand. They check how accurately you articulate basic words and phrases, but there’s no need to imitate a specific accent. The goal is to communicate effectively and make your speech comprehensible to the listener.
Vocabulary
In this step, your ability to use appropriate vocabulary is assessed. Examiners look for clarity in word usage and the ability to discuss a variety of topics.
They also evaluate how well you convey your ideas, even when you lack the perfect word. Candidates should avoid using complex words without understanding their meaning, as this can negatively impact their score.
Accuracy in Grammar
To achieve a high score, candidates must demonstrate grammatical accuracy, particularly in the use of tenses. Simple sentences with correct grammar are often more effective and can help candidates perform well in this category.
How IELTS Bands Are Calculated
The IELTS scoring system evaluates four key skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each skill receives a band score, and the overall band score is the average of these.
Example:
If a candidate scores:
Listening: 6.5
Speaking: 7.0
Reading: 6.5
Writing: 5.0
The overall band score will be 6.5.
Mistakes in any section can impact both individual and overall scores.
Understanding IELTS Band Scores: What They Mean
Band 9: Expert User
A Band 9 score signifies native-level fluency. Test takers at this level display flawless command of English grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills. They can discuss any topic naturally and articulate even the most complex ideas with precision and ease.
Band 8: Very Good User
This score reflects a strong grasp of the language, with minimal inaccuracies. A Band 8 scorer can fluently engage in advanced conversations, adjust their tone and style as needed, and express thoughts with clarity and depth, ideal for academic and professional scenarios.
Band 7: Good User
Achieving Band 7 indicates reliable and effective English skills. Test takers can confidently navigate most communication situations, convey ideas clearly, and participate in discussions without difficulty, though they may have occasional slips in structure or word choice.
Band 6: Competent User
A Band 6 represents a functional level of English. Candidates can communicate in everyday situations and familiar contexts with a fair amount of ease. While grammar or vocabulary errors may arise, their overall message is generally understood.
Why English Skills Are Crucial for the UAE
In a globalized and competitive world, English is the lingua franca of business and education. From academic pursuits to corporate environments, fluency in English is essential for success. For professionals and students in the UAE, mastering English provides an edge in a multicultural and international context.

What Is IELTS Preparation at WizMantra UAE?
It's live one to one coaching online for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, 30 minutes a class at a fixed slot in Gulf Standard Time, for candidates anywhere in the UAE. Both full courses are AED 1,038, a targeted General Training course is AED 862, and every one starts with an AED 30 demo where a trainer checks which version you need and where your band stands.
Which IELTS do you need: Academic, General Training or UKVI?
The one your paperwork names. That sounds obvious, but booking the wrong version is one of the most expensive mistakes a UAE candidate can make, because there's no switching after the test.
| Version | Usually asked for by | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Universities, colleges, professional registers | Academic reading passages; Writing Task 1 describes a graph, table or diagram |
| IELTS General Training | Migration and work files: Canada, Australia, UK and others | Everyday and workplace reading; Writing Task 1 is a letter |
| IELTS for UKVI | Some UK visa routes | Same Academic or General Training test, booked as UKVI |
Listening and Speaking are identical in Academic and General Training. So is Task 2, the 250 word essay. That's why the same trainer can take you through either, and why the first class after your demo looks much the same whichever you're sitting.
A few files accept either version. Australia's competent English for skilled visas, for example, takes Academic or General Training at a score of at least 6 in each component, though it won't accept a test taken online at home. When you have a choice, pick the one whose reading and Task 1 suit you better.
What will the IELTS test cost you in the UAE?
About AED 1,600 at IDP UAE for a standard computer test. The exact figures, before any coaching:
| IDP UAE test option | Fee |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic or General Training, on computer | AED 1,590 |
| IELTS Academic or General Training, on computer with writing on paper | AED 1,750 |
| IELTS for UKVI | AED 1,680 |
| One Skill Retake (one module only) | AED 1,000 |
Source: IDP UAE test dates and fees. Test fees belong to the test centre and can change, so check when you book.
Put the numbers side by side and the case for preparing properly is plain. One full resit costs more than our full course. The One Skill Retake helps if a single module falls short, but it's still AED 1,000 you'd rather keep.
Which band should you aim for?
Whatever your file or offer asks for in each module, plus a small margin. Overall bands get the attention, but the per module floor is what usually decides things.
Canada is the clearest case. Express Entry counts CLB 7 as IELTS General Training 6.0 in each of reading, writing, listening and speaking (Government of Canada). A 7.0 overall with 5.5 in writing still misses it. Universities often work the same way: an overall band plus a minimum in each module, so read the entry requirement line by line.
Already have scores from a mock or a past test? The IELTS band score calculator works out the overall band and the module that would lift it most. For targets of 7 and above, our article on what band 7 takes in the UAE goes module by module.
How does IELTS preparation at WizMantra run?
It starts with the AED 30 demo. A trainer listens to you speak, looks at a short piece of writing and gives you a rough band for each module. From there you get a plan: which version, which module first, and how many weeks before booking the test looks sensible.
After that it's 30 minutes, one to one, at the same slot each week in Gulf Standard Time. You write before class; the class is spent on what went wrong. Speaking is practised live with a person who interrupts, asks for more and pushes you into Part 3 territory, the way the examiner does.
- Essays and letters marked against the four public writing criteria, then rewritten in class.
- Reading and listening sets done under the real time limits.
- A recording and written notes after every class, so the corrections don't vanish.
- Timed mocks with a band estimate per module, so you book the test when the numbers say so.
A plan runs for its stated length from activation and unused sessions lapse. Pick a slot you'll keep through Ramadan, school holidays and month end at work.
Can you prepare in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah without a centre?
Yes. Classes are online, so where you live changes nothing about the course or the fee. What changes by emirate is where you'll sit the test and how far you'll drive on the day.
For local details there are pages for IELTS in Dubai, IELTS in Abu Dhabi and IELTS in Sharjah. Test centres operate in all three, and in other cities too.
What trips up IELTS candidates in the UAE?
Writing, more than anything. And the mistakes follow first language patterns closely enough that a trainer can usually predict them after one essay.
- Arabic speakers often drop is and are, add a second pronoun ("the company which I joined it") and build very long sentences on and.
- Hindi and Urdu speakers tend to overuse the continuous tense and leave out a and the, which pulls down grammatical accuracy.
- Malayalam and Tamil speakers often keep statement word order in questions, which shows in speaking.
- Tagalog speakers sometimes swap he and she, because Filipino uses one pronoun for both.
The other common pattern is the fluent professional who uses English at work all day and assumes the test will be easy. Speaking usually goes well. Writing often doesn't, because office English is full of shortcuts and an essay needs a clear position held all the way through.
To practise between classes, the IELTS speaking questions page has Part 1 to 3 prompts and the Writing Task 2 page explains how essays are marked.
IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or Duolingo: does it have to be IELTS?
Not always. Many universities and some migration routes accept more than one test, and the formats suit different people. PTE is computer marked from start to finish. TOEFL is the test many US universities know best. Duolingo is short and taken at home, which is exactly why it won't work for an Australian skilled visa: Home Affairs doesn't accept at-home tests.
Check the list your university or route publishes, then choose. If it's not IELTS, see PTE preparation, TOEFL preparation or Duolingo English Test practice. If your English needs work before any test, Advance English is the place to start, and every price is on the AED fee page.
What should you do before booking anything?
Three things, in this order. They take an evening, and they save most of the wasted money we hear about.
- Find the exact requirement in writing: the version, the overall band and the minimum per module. Screenshot it.
- Get an honest estimate of where you are today. A full mock at home works, or the demo, where a trainer does it with you.
- Count back from your deadline. If the gap is one band in one module, a few weeks may do. If it's a band or more across writing and speaking, give it longer and book the test last.
Then book the test only when your timed mocks hit the target in every module. Not once, twice. That's the cheapest IELTS advice there is.
IELTS Preparation Fees (AED)
One price per course, taught one to one online. The test fee is separate and goes to the test centre.
| Course | Who it suits | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | University admission and professional registration | AED 1,038 |
| IELTS General Training | Migration, work and visa files | AED 1,038 |
| IELTS General, targeted (ad hoc) | You've sat IELTS before and need to lift one or two bands | AED 862 |
| Demo class | Level check, band estimate and a study plan | AED 30 |
Each class is a 30 minute live one to one session. A plan runs for its stated length from activation and unused sessions lapse. Every IELTS fee is also listed on the AED fee page.
