IELTS Band Score Calculator
Your IELTS overall band is the average of your four skill scores, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 goes up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 goes up to the next whole band. That single rule is why two candidates with the same total can walk away with different overall scores.
The calculator below applies it, shows the arithmetic, and tells you which one skill would move you up if you are short of the band you need. If Canada is the plan it also converts your result to CLB, which is the number IRCC actually reads.
IELTS band score calculator
Put in your four scores. It applies the official rounding rule, tells you what would move you up, and converts your result to CLB if Canada is the plan.
Set this and the calculator works out the shortest route to it.
The overall band is worked out the same way for both. It changes the CLB note underneath.
Your overall band6.0
How the overall band is worked out
Add the four skill scores, divide by four, round to the nearest half band. The two rounding cases people get wrong are the ones that land exactly halfway.
| Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Average | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.5 | 6.5 | 5.0 | 7.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
| 6.5 | 6.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.125 | 6.0 |
| 4.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.0 | 3.875 | 4.0 |
Those three are the worked examples IELTS publishes itself. The middle one is the one that stings. An average of 6.125 sits closer to 6.0 than to 6.5, so it rounds down, and a candidate who needed 6.5 books the test again.
Why half a band in one skill can move everything
Because of the rounding, the gap between two overall bands is sometimes half a band in a single skill, and sometimes a full band in two.
Take 6.5, 6.5, 5.5, 6.0. The average is 6.125 and the overall is 6.0. Lift writing from 5.5 to 6.0 and the average becomes 6.25, which rounds up to 6.5. One half band in one skill, and the certificate says something different.
That is what the shortest route box in the calculator is for. Set the band you need and it tells you which skill to put your hours into, rather than spreading practice evenly across four.
What your result means if you are going to Canada
IRCC does not read band scores. It reads CLB, the Canadian Language Benchmark, and the conversion is per skill rather than overall. These four rules decide whether your result can be used at all.
- General Training only. Express Entry does not accept IELTS Academic, so book the General Training paper if Canada is the goal. The IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted either.
- CLB 7 in all four is the first official language minimum for Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades.
- Your weakest skill sets your level. CLB is not an average, so one soft skill pulls the whole profile down to its own level.
- Results must be under two years old both when you complete the Express Entry profile and when you submit the application.
The trap sits in listening. CLB 8 asks for listening 7.5 while reading only needs 6.5, so a flat 6.5 in every skill is still CLB 7. Candidates who train all four evenly often find they have bought nothing.
EmSAT and IELTS, the honest answer
There is no single public conversion table between EmSAT Achieve English and IELTS. Universities in the UAE set their own equivalence, which is why the conversion charts floating around online disagree with each other.
One documented figure does exist. The Ministry of Education's own teaching recruitment treats an EmSAT English score of 1400 as equivalent to IELTS 6.0 Academic or 6.5 General Training.
Use that as a reference point, not as a rule. If a university or an employer asks for an EmSAT score, ask them what they accept in its place. Get the answer in writing before you pay for a test you may not need.
Where the band you need actually comes from
Not from a chart. From the institution asking for it.
Immigration requirements are published and fixed: CLB 7 for the main Express Entry programmes, and the conversion above tells you what that is in bands. University and employer requirements are set one by one, they differ between departments of the same university, and they change between intakes.
So check the specific programme, in writing, before you decide what to aim for. A candidate training for 7.0 when the course wanted 6.5 has spent months buying nothing.
Train the skill that is actually holding you back
The calculator names the one skill that would move your overall. That is where the hours belong.
WizMantra teaches IELTS preparation one to one and online across the UAE, so the lesson is built around your weakest skill rather than a fixed syllabus. A demo class costs AED 30 and includes a level check, which tells you where you sit before you book a test date.
Questions
IELTS band scores, answered
What candidates in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah ask us about scoring.
1How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Average your four skill scores and round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. So 6.25 becomes 6.5, while 6.125 rounds down to 6.0.
2Can my overall band be higher than all four of my scores?
No. The overall is an average, so it sits between your lowest and highest skill score. It can round up above the plain average, which is why 6.5, 6.5, 5.0 and 7.0 gives an overall of 6.5 rather than 6.25.
3What is my IELTS score in CLB for Canada?
CLB is converted per skill, not from your overall, and your weakest skill sets your level. Express Entry accepts General Training only, and the minimum for the main programmes is CLB 7 in all four skills. The calculator above shows your level once you enter four scores.
4What EmSAT score equals IELTS 6.0?
There is no single official conversion table, and UAE universities set their own equivalence. The one documented figure comes from Ministry of Education teaching recruitment, which treats EmSAT English 1400 as equivalent to IELTS 6.0 Academic or 6.5 General Training. Ask the institution what it accepts.
5Is 6.5 a good IELTS score?
It depends entirely on who is asking for it. Band 6.5 clears many university programmes and, in General Training, gives CLB 8 in reading, writing and speaking but only CLB 7 in listening. Check the requirement of the specific programme rather than a general chart.
6Which skill should I retake or focus on?
The one that moves your overall for the least work, which is rarely your lowest score. Enter your four scores and a target band above, and the calculator names the single skill and the exact half band that would get you there.
