French Classes in Abu Dhabi, Live and One to One

French Classes in Abu Dhabi, Live and One to One

Professional French for the capital's culture, energy and diplomatic sectors.

Live 1-on-1 French across Abu Dhabi, Khalifa City and Mussafah. A1 to B2, built around the situations you actually need it for, from AED 640 a month.

Abu Dhabi has a French connection most cities do not

The cultural and energy sectors here have real French ties, so French can matter in Abu Dhabi jobs more than the size of the community suggests.

Culture and museumsAbu Dhabi's flagship museum, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, came out of an agreement with France. French stays useful around it, in curation, education and visitor services.
Energy and engineeringSeveral large operators here are French owned or French partnered, and Francophone West Africa features in many of their portfolios.
Diplomatic and international bodiesAbu Dhabi is the capital, so embassies and international organisations are here rather than in Dubai. French is a working language in many.
French curriculum schoolsParents needing enough French to follow a parent evening, and students sitting French as part of their school programme.

Professional French is a different course

If you need French for work rather than for travel, the vocabulary you need is narrow and the register matters. We build the syllabus from what you actually do.

  • Email and written register. French professional writing is more formal than English, and getting that wrong reads worse than a grammar mistake.
  • Meetings and calls, including the polite formulas that carry a lot of weight and are easy to skip in a general course.
  • Your sector's vocabulary, whether that is energy, culture or education, rather than a generic word list.
  • Understanding at speed, which is the hard part and the one that decides whether you can sit in a meeting.

One thing to settle early. If your goal is a certificate rather than the job itself, say so at the demo, because DELF preparation and professional French pull in different directions.

Time spent on one is time not spent on the other.

What the levels mean here

A1 to B2 on the CEFR scale. For many professional roles the realistic target is B1, the point where you can work in the language rather than perform in it.

LevelIn practice
A1Courtesy, introductions, ordering, basic questions
A2Everyday conversation, your work and your past
B1A work conversation, explaining a problem, following a colleague at normal speed
B2Meetings, argument, professional writing, reading unaided

CEFR levels are published by the Council of Europe. Where an employer or institution states a level, theirs is the requirement that counts.

Abu Dhabi runs on institutional French

The capital has a French footprint that is academic and official rather than commercial, and it changes who needs the language and at what level.

Sorbonne University Abu DhabiA French university operating in the capital, with programmes taught in French. Its admissions pages ask for B2 French for the French taught programmes, a real proficiency standard rather than a conversational one.
The French school networkFamilies in French curriculum schooling, where a parent often needs enough French to follow school communication and support homework.
Diplomatic and official presenceEmbassy, cultural and government facing roles where French is a working language rather than a line on a CV.
Energy and defence partnershipsLong running French corporate involvement in the emirate, where French is useful in the room even when the meeting runs in English.

The practical consequence: in Abu Dhabi, French often comes with a required level and a date attached. Tell us the requirement at the start and the plan is built backwards from it.

How long does it take to learn French?

The US Foreign Service Institute puts French in its easiest group for English speakers: roughly 600 to 750 class hours to professional working proficiency. It is the most widely cited figure, because the FSI has been timing exactly this for decades.

Is three months enough to learn French?

Not to fluency. Anyone promising that is selling something.

Three months of steady one to one work gets you through the basics: introducing yourself, ordering, asking directions and handling a short exchange at work. A real result, and not the same thing as fluency. The difference is mostly hours.

LevelGuided hours from zeroWhat you can do
A2About 180 to 200Order, ask directions, short work exchanges, simple emails
B1About 350 to 400Manage most situations that come up, explain and give reasons
B2About 500 to 600Argue a point, work in French, the level Canada and most employers want

Cambridge English’s guided learning hours per CEFR level, counting lessons and set homework. They were written for English, but the CEFR scale is the same, and for French they sit close to the FSI’s 600 to 750 hours. Estimates, not a guarantee.

What is the 80/20 rule in French?

The idea that a small slice of the language does most of the work. The most frequent thousand or so French words cover the large majority of ordinary speech, so learning those properly beats learning five thousand badly.

A rule of thumb rather than a law. It is why early sessions drill a narrow set of verbs, être, avoir, aller, faire, pouvoir, vouloir, until they are automatic.

The other 20 percent is where fluency actually lives. Nobody puts that on a poster.

What A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 mean in French

Six CEFR levels, published by the Council of Europe and used by every French exam board. DELF covers A1 to B2. DALF covers C1 and C2.

LevelWhat you can actually doExam
A1Introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, follow slow speech about familiar thingsDELF A1
A2Handle routine exchanges, shopping, directions, describe your background and job in plain termsDELF A2
B1Deal with most situations while travelling, describe experiences, give reasonsDELF B1
B2Follow a fast conversation, argue a point, work in French. The level most requirements nameDELF B2
C1Use French flexibly at work and university, catch implied meaning and registerDALF C1
C2Near native command, precise in complex situations. Rarely required by anyoneDALF C2

CEFR descriptors are published by the Council of Europe.

We teach A1 to B2, which is where most practical requirements sit: work, DELF, school and immigration files. Past B2 the work is literary and idiomatic, better done by reading and living in the language than by taking classes.

Where can you learn French in Abu Dhabi?

Four realistic routes, suiting different people. We are one of them, not the answer to every case.

RouteFormatSuitsThe catch
Cultural institutesGroup terms in a centre, with culture and library accessPeople who want the community as much as the languageFixed term dates, and a drive across the island at the worst hour
Language schoolsGroup or private, in centre, term basedLearners who want a classroom and a set timetableYou speak for a fraction of a group hour
AppsSelf paced, gamifiedDrilling vocabulary between real lessonsNobody corrects your speaking, which is the part that matters
Online one to oneLive video, one tutor, your slot, AED 640 a monthWorking people, parents, anyone whose week movesNo classroom, no cohort to socialise with

Centre based providers price by term and change their rates, so check current fees with them directly. Our rate is published above and is identical in every emirate.

Be honest about your week before choosing. The failure to avoid is not the method. It is booking a term of evening classes and stopping in week three because the travel beat the intention.

Where you actually sit DELF and TCF

We teach the French. We do not run the exam. DELF, DALF, TCF and TEF are run by accredited centres, and you book directly with them.

Alliance Française Abu Dhabi is the long standing French cultural centre in the capital and runs official examinations. Session dates are fixed months ahead and can fill before university and immigration deadlines.

  • Confirm which exam your university, employer or immigration route actually requires before you book
  • Check the current exam calendar and fee with the centre directly, since both change
  • Register early. Missing a session can mean waiting months, not weeks
  • Tell us the exam and the date in your first session, because preparation for a graded exam is not the same as general conversation practice

If the goal is Canada, read the next section before you book anything at all.

If it is for Canada, the exam is not DELF

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts only TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French. DELF and DALF do not count. Some people discover this after paying for the wrong exam.

French results are reported on the NCLC scale, the French counterpart of CLB. Federal Skilled Worker applicants need at least NCLC 7 in all four abilities, roughly CEFR B2.

French tutoring for school students

School French is a different job from adult French. The exam sets the syllabus, and the marks tend to go in predictable places.

IB MYP and DPFrench B at Standard or Higher Level, plus ab initio for students starting late. The oral assessment carries real weight, so it gets real practice.
British curriculumKey Stage 3 through GCSE and A Level, where written accuracy and the speaking exam need the most practice.
French curriculum schoolsChildren in a francophone school who are behind in class and need support in French, not support learning French.
Joining lateA student moving into a school where French is already two years in. It needs a catch up plan rather than a beginner course.

Younger children sit on a separate track. See French classes for kids.

Is there a French class near me?

Honestly, no, and deliberately. There is no WizMantra classroom in Abu Dhabi. Every session is live video with one tutor and one learner, so the nearest class is wherever you are sitting.

Which turns the usual disadvantage of living outside the centre into nothing at all.

Khalifa City, Al Reem, Yas Island, Al Mushrif, Mussafah or out at Al Ain: it makes no difference to us, and a great deal of difference to your week.

Same across the Emirates. Dubai and Sharjah get the same tutors and the same published rate.

Questions

French Classes in Abu Dhabi

Common questions from learners in Abu Dhabi, answered.

1Can you teach French for my job rather than in general?

Yes. Tell us the sector and the situations, meetings, email, client calls, and the vocabulary is built from those rather than from a general syllabus. Professional French is narrower than general French, so a focused course gets you working sooner.

2What level do I need to work in French?

B1 is a sensible working minimum: you can hold a work conversation and follow a colleague speaking normally. B2 if you will be in meetings or writing professionally. If an employer has stated a level, use theirs, because the requirement is theirs to set.

3What does it cost?

AED 640 for one month, AED 1,200 for two, AED 1,536 for three, the same in every emirate. The demo is AED 30 and includes a level check. The three month plan saves AED 384 against paying monthly, and every class is live and one to one.

4How quickly can I get to B1?

From a standing start, B1 is counted in hundreds of hours: Cambridge English puts it at about 350 to 400 guided learning hours, lessons and homework together. It comes faster if you already speak Spanish or Italian, and faster again if you speak French between sessions.

5Do you prepare for DELF?

Yes, up to B2. Confirm which level your institution requires before you prepare. DELF preparation and professional French are not the same course, and time spent on one is time not spent on the other. Bring the exam date to your first session.

6Is three months enough to learn French?

Not to fluency. Three months of steady one to one work gets you through the basics: introducing yourself, ordering, asking directions and handling a short exchange at work. The Foreign Service Institute puts professional working proficiency at 600 to 750 class hours for an English speaker.

7What is the 80/20 rule in French?

The idea that a small part of the language does most of the work: the most frequent thousand or so words cover the large majority of ordinary speech. It is a rule of thumb, and it is why early sessions drill a narrow set of core verbs until they are automatic.

8Which French test does Canada accept?

Only TEF Canada and TCF Canada. DELF and DALF are not accepted for Express Entry, which catches people out after they have already paid for the wrong exam. Results use the NCLC scale, and Federal Skilled Worker applicants need at least NCLC 7 in all four abilities, roughly CEFR B2.

9Where do I sit the DELF exam in Abu Dhabi?

At an accredited centre, booked directly with them rather than through us. Alliance Française Abu Dhabi is the long standing French centre in the capital and runs official examinations. Check the current calendar and fee with them, and register early because sessions can fill.

10Do you prepare students for French at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi?

Yes, to the level the programme requires. Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi asks for B2 French for its French taught programmes, and the requirement is the university’s to set and confirm. Tell us the target level and the deadline in the first session.

11Do you tutor French for IB or GCSE students?

Yes. IB French B at Standard and Higher Level and ab initio, plus Key Stage 3 through GCSE and A Level. Sessions target the oral assessment and written accuracy rather than covering the syllabus a second time. Tell us the exam board and the date at the start.

12Is there a French class near me in Abu Dhabi?

There is no WizMantra classroom in Abu Dhabi, and that is deliberate. Sessions are live video, one tutor and one learner, so the class is wherever you are. Khalifa City, Al Reem, Yas, Mussafah or Al Ain makes no difference to the slot you book.

13I am an absolute beginner. Is that a problem?

No. You need no French whatsoever, and the demo assesses you rather than asking you to choose a level. Starting from zero is normal, and the first sessions are built for it. People who did some French at school can place higher than they expect.

Tell us what you need French for

A museum role, an energy contract and a school syllabus need three different courses. The AED 30 demo establishes your level and what you actually need, before you pay for the wrong one.
