At Wizmantra, we’ve poured our passion into creating a truly special ‘French for Kids’ program, or as we affectionately call it, Français pour Enfants. This program is designed to spark joy and curiosity in young learners. Our dedicated educators act as nurturing guides, supporting every child’s journey while keeping parents closely updated on their progress. We understand that apprendre une nouvelle langue, comme le français, can be a delightful challenge for children, whether it’s their first foreign language or a connection to their roots. That’s why our programs are thoughtfully tailored, with every class one to one and matched to your child’s age and level, all led by experienced professeurs de français. Our main goal is to cultivate a friendly, motivating atmosphere: un espace où chaque enfant peut apprendre et s’amuser: where children discover new things, have fun, and explore la riche culture française et ses traditions. During the lessons, children are taught important aspects of the language such as la grammaire et le vocabulaire essentiel. They are trained on the basic communicative skills: parler, lire, écrire et écouter.

What Are the Kids French Classes at WizMantra UAE?

They're live online French lessons with one tutor and one child, 30 minutes at a time, Monday to Friday at a slot that fits around school. Children start speaking in the first class and work from A1 up to B1, with DELF Prim and DELF Junior style tasks for those who want a certificate. Every child starts with an AED 30 demo that checks their level, and the fee is quoted in AED after it.

Why do so many UAE children learn French?

Often because school asks them to. Many UAE private schools offer French as an extra language alongside compulsory Arabic, and families add a tutor early to make secondary school easier. Others have a move to Canada, France or Belgium in mind.

So for most children here French isn't a second language at all. It's the third or fourth, after a home language, English at school and Arabic. That's a lot to juggle at nine years old, and it's why a class that only reteaches what school covered tends to stall. Children need to hear and say French far more often than a busy school timetable allows.

There's a third group too. Some families already speak French at home, or a grandparent does, and the child understands far more than they can say. Those children don't need to start at the alphabet. They need speaking time and someone to fix the grammar that never got taught.

How is a kids French class different from an adult one?

More listening, more repetition, far less grammar terminology. Children pick up sounds and patterns quickly when they hear and use them, so the tutor talks, plays and asks questions in French and saves explanations for the moments a child is genuinely stuck.

  • Ages 5 to 8: songs, colours, numbers, simple questions, and getting used to French sounds.
  • Ages 9 to 12: short conversations, reading simple texts, and writing a few correct sentences.
  • Teenagers: school French support, verb tenses, and spoken confidence for oral exams.

Here's roughly how 30 minutes goes for an eight year old at A1. A quick hello and a song they already know. A game where the tutor holds up objects and the child names the colour in French, first with help, then without. A short role play, say buying fruit at a market stall. Two minutes at the end where the child teaches the tutor back the three new words. Then the recording and notes go to the parent.

Short sessions work for a reason. Thirty minutes is about as long as most young children stay sharp after a school day, and a weekday slot keeps French close to the surface rather than something that happens once a week and is half forgotten by the next class.

The demo is where the tutor works out which of these fits. In 30 minutes they'll check what your child already knows, try a game or two to see how they respond, and tell you which level to start at. You get the AED fee after that, so you aren't committing to anything before your child has met the tutor.

What about DELF Prim and DELF Junior?

They're the children's and teenagers' versions of DELF, the official French diploma. DELF comes in three versions: DELF Prim for children aged 7 to 12, DELF Junior for 13 to 17, and the adult version. All are issued by the French Ministry of Education through France Education International, and the diplomas are valid for life (France Education International).

Each exam tests four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), and each skill is marked out of 25. DELF levels run from A1 to B2, so a child can sit A1 at eight, A2 a couple of years later, and build a set of certificates that never expires.

In the UAE, Alliance Française Dubai runs the official sessions. A DELF level gives a child a clear target and a certificate that lasts. We prepare children for the exam tasks; the exam itself is booked and sat with the test centre.

For adults choosing between French exams, our guide to DELF, TEF and TCF in the UAE explains which one fits which goal.

How long before a child speaks French?

Usually a few weeks for the first words and phrases, and around three to six months of regular classes for simple conversations. That's the honest range. Where a child lands in it depends on age, how often they hear French outside class and whether they enjoy it.

CEFR levelWhat a child can usually doWhere it shows up
A1Say who they are, count, name colours and family, ask simple questionsDELF A1, early school French
A2Talk about school, hobbies and daily routine in short sentencesDELF A2, middle school French
B1Tell a story, explain an opinion, follow a clear conversationDELF B1, secondary exams

Levels follow the Council of Europe CEFR global scale.

Younger children often sound better faster. Their accent settles quickly and they copy sounds without fuss. Older children move faster on reading, writing and grammar, because they can handle a rule once it's explained. Both patterns are normal.

Does your child's home language make French easier?

Sometimes, yes. UAE classrooms mix dozens of home languages, and each one helps with some parts of French and gets in the way of others.

  • Arabic at home or at school: the French R comes easily, because it's close to the Arabic غ sound. P and b are harder (poisson and boisson can sound the same), and so are the nasal vowels in vin and bon.
  • Hindi or Urdu at home: children already know that nouns can be masculine or feminine. The genders just don't line up with French ones, so every new noun is learned with le or la attached.
  • Malayalam, Tamil or Tagalog at home: French spelling is the shock. Lots of written letters are never said, and children who read phonetically need time to stop pronouncing them.
  • English-medium school: a huge number of French words look familiar (animal, table, orange), which helps reading. False friends catch them out later.

None of this is a problem. A tutor who knows the pattern just spends the class on the right sounds from the start.

Children juggling Arabic and English scripts at school do get one break. French uses the same alphabet as English, plus a handful of accents, so all the new work is in the sounds and the spelling rules.

How can parents help between classes?

You don't need to speak French. What helps most is small, regular contact with the language at home.

  • Play the class recording in the car on the school run, even if nobody is actively listening.
  • Ask your child to teach you the three new words from today, every day.
  • Put French cartoons or songs on once or twice a week, with French audio.
  • Label five things in the kitchen in French and swap them each week.
  • Let older children try the free French A1 practice quiz once a month to see what stuck.

Classes run Monday to Friday at one slot you choose in Gulf Standard Time, so pick a time that doesn't clash with homework, Arabic tuition or football. It works the same in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain or Fujairah. Learning French yourself too? See French classes for adults, or browse every language class for kids.
