DELF, TEF or TCF: Which French Exam Do You Need in the UAE?
A lot of people in the UAE start learning French for a specific reason: extra points on a Canadian immigration profile, a transfer to a French-speaking office, a university place in France. Then they book the wrong exam.
It’s an expensive mistake and a common one, because DELF, TEF and TCF sound interchangeable and aren’t. Here’s which one your actual goal requires.
The three are different kinds of thing
This is the part that causes the confusion. They aren’t three brands of the same product.
- DELF and DALF are diplomas. Issued by the French Ministry of Education, awarded at a fixed CEFR level, and they don’t expire. You sit the B1 exam, you pass, you hold B1 for life.
- TCF is a test. You don’t pass or fail. You sit it and receive a level based on how you performed. Results have a limited validity period.
- TEF is also a test, run by the Paris Chamber of Commerce, likewise scored rather than passed, likewise time-limited.
So “I have B2 French” means something permanent if it’s a DELF, and something dated if it’s a TCF or TEF.

If you’re chasing Canada PR from the UAE
This is the biggest single reason people here take up French, so it’s worth being precise.
For federal Express Entry, IRCC’s accepted French tests are the Canada-specific versions: TEF Canada and TCF Canada. DELF and DALF, despite being respected diplomas, are not on that list. Sitting a DELF B2 and expecting it to feed your Express Entry French points doesn’t work.
Quebec runs its own immigration programmes with a different accepted list, where DELF B2 and DALF do count, alongside TEFAQ and TCFQ. And for a citizenship application later, the accepted list is broader again.
Three practical points that save people money:
- Book the Canada-specific version, not the general one. “TEF” and “TEF Canada” are not the same product, and neither are “TCF” and “TCF Canada”. People book the wrong variant regularly.
- Check the IRCC list yourself before you pay. Accepted tests and minimum scores change. Anything you read online, including this page, can go out of date between publication and your booking.
- Watch the validity window. Test results expire. Sitting the exam a year before you’re ready to submit can mean sitting it twice.
What level you need, and how long that takes
Most immigration and study goals sit at B1 or B2. That’s a real distance from zero, and being honest about it saves disappointment.

These are the commonly cited CEFR guided-learning ranges, and individuals vary a lot. If you already speak another Romance language, you’ll move faster. If French is your first European language, expect the upper end.
What this means in calendar time for someone working full time in Dubai: B1 is realistically a nine to fifteen month project at two sessions a week, not a summer. Anyone promising B2 in twelve weeks from zero is selling something.

Sitting the exam in the UAE
You don’t need to leave the country. French exams are administered in the UAE through the recognised centres, with Alliance Française operating in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. What you should confirm directly with the centre, rather than trusting any blog:
- Which specific exam variants they run, particularly whether they offer the Canada versions
- Session dates, which are limited and fill up
- Current fees in AED
- Registration deadlines, which often close weeks before the sitting
Plan backwards from a session date. Deciding to sit an exam and discovering the next session is four months away is a common and avoidable frustration.
Common questions
Can I take DELF and TEF Canada both?
Yes, and some people do: DELF for the permanent diploma an employer will recognise years from now, TEF Canada for the immigration file. It’s two sets of fees, so only do it if both goals are real.
Is DELF harder than TCF?
Not harder, different. DELF tests whether you meet a fixed level and you can fail it. TCF places you wherever you land, so you can’t fail, but you also can’t retake it cheaply if you land lower than you hoped.
Do I need a course, or can I self-study?
Reading and listening respond well to self-study. Speaking and writing are the scored components people underestimate, and they need someone correcting you. That’s the same pattern as IELTS, and it catches people out the same way.
How much French do I need for a job in Dubai?
