Why Abu Dhabi candidates usually need a specific band, not a good one
Abu Dhabi IELTS candidates are disproportionately applying for something with a written rule attached: a professional registration, a government or semi government role, a university place, or a migration route. All of those state a minimum, and most state it per section.
That changes how you should prepare. Somebody chasing a general improvement can afford a broad approach. Somebody who needs 7 in writing and has 6.5 needs to spend almost all their time on writing, and nothing at all on the sections already above the line.
What the exam costs, and where you sit it
Abu Dhabi has official centres from both IDP and the British Council. The fee is identical at either, and identical to Dubai. You book directly with the provider.

Testing also runs in Dubai, Sharjah, Al Ain, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Khorfakkan and Dibba, so if Abu Dhabi dates are full, Al Ain is often the shorter drive from the western suburbs than waiting three weeks.

The mix here is different from Dubai. More public sector, more energy, more people whose employer is the reason they are sitting the test.
Academic or General Training, and why it matters here
Choosing the wrong one costs you the full fee and several weeks. In Abu Dhabi the split is unusually even, because the university applicants and the migration applicants are both well represented.

How preparation works
Live one to one online, at a slot fixed with you, at AED 1,038 a month for General Training or Academic. If you have already sat the test and need one or two bands lifted, the Adhoc course is AED 862.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I take IELTS in Abu Dhabi?
Both IDP and the British Council run authorised centres in Abu Dhabi. IDP also lists Dubai, Sharjah, Al Ain, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Khorfakkan and Dibba as UAE test cities. Availability varies by date and test type, so book early rather than assuming a slot exists.
How much is the IELTS exam in Abu Dhabi?
AED 1,470 for Academic or General Training on computer, AED 1,620 if you write on paper, and AED 1,570 for UKVI. Those are IDP's listed UAE fees as of September 2026 and are the same across the Emirates. Check the current figure with the provider before paying.
Do I need Academic or General Training?
Academic for university admission and some professional registration, General Training for most migration and work routes. Speaking and listening are identical in both; reading and Writing Task 1 differ. Confirm with the organisation receiving your score, because sitting the wrong version means paying twice.
I need 7 in every band but only writing is short. What now?
Focus almost entirely on writing, and look at One Skill Retake, which lets you resit a single section for AED 962 within 60 days of the original test. Check first that your receiving body accepts a One Skill Retake result, as not all do.
Are the classes in Abu Dhabi city?
No. Every class is live and online, one to one, which is precisely what makes it workable for shift patterns in Mussafah or the western region where a fixed classroom time is not realistic.
How long will preparation take?
Six to twelve weeks for most candidates lifting one band. Two bands takes longer and sometimes longer than a candidate wants to hear. The AED 30 demo gives you a level assessment and an honest answer about your timeframe before you commit to a course.
