IELTS in Dubai: Fees, Test Centres and How to Book

IELTS in Dubai costs AED 1,470 for Academic or General Training on computer, or AED 1,620 if you write on paper. Both IDP and the British Council run official centres in the city, the fee is the same at either, and you book directly on the provider's own site. Nothing on this page is booked through us.

This is the practical side of IELTS: what it costs, where you sit it, and which version you actually need. If you want help getting the score, that is a separate thing and it is covered at the end.

IELTS exam fees in the UAE

The fee is set by the test provider. No preparation centre, including us, can discount it, and anyone advertising a cheaper official IELTS should be treated with suspicion.

Writing on a computer rather than on paper saves you AED 150 on the same test. It is the same exam, the same marking and the same certificate.

Where you can sit IELTS in the UAE

IDP and the British Council both operate official centres in Dubai. Testing also runs across the other emirates, so you do not have to travel into Dubai if somewhere closer has a date that suits you.

Two practical points. Dates around university intake deadlines fill first, so book earlier than feels necessary. And if you live outside Dubai, check the nearer centres before defaulting to the city, because a 7am test in Dubai means leaving very early.

IDP or British Council: does it matter?

No. Both are official IELTS providers, the test is identical, the marking is identical, and the standard fee is the same at AED 1,470. Anyone telling you one is easier is guessing.

What actually differs is logistics: which centre is easier to reach, and who has a date that fits your deadline. Choose on that.

Same test

Identical questions, identical band descriptors, identical certificate. Both are recognised everywhere IELTS is accepted.

Same standard fee

AED 1,470 for the computer test at either provider. Price is not a reason to pick one.

Different dates

Availability is the real difference. Check both before booking if your deadline is tight.

Different locations

Pick the centre you can reach calmly on the morning. Arriving stressed costs you more than any provider difference.

Academic or General Training: which do you need?

Academic is for university admission and most professional registration. General Training is for migration, work visas and some vocational study. Reading and writing differ between them; listening and speaking are the same.

Taking the wrong module means paying the full fee a second time. Confirm the requirement in writing with the university, employer or immigration authority before you book.

How to book, and what to take with you

Book on the provider's own site. IDP and the British Council both take bookings directly. You do not need an agent and you should not pay one a fee to do it for you.
Use the same ID you will bring. Your passport or Emirates ID number on the booking must match the document you present on the day, exactly.
Bring that same document. No document, no test, and no refund. This is the single most common avoidable failure.
Arrive early. Latecomers are refused entry. Dubai traffic is not accepted as a reason.
Results. Computer-based results typically arrive within a few days; paper-based takes longer. Check the timeline against your application deadline before choosing a format.

One Skill Retake, the option most people miss

If you scored well overall but missed your target in a single skill, you can retake just that section rather than the whole test. It costs AED 962 on computer instead of AED 1,470, and it must be booked within 60 days of your original test. For anyone who is half a band short in writing, this is usually the cheapest route to the score.

How long to prepare

Half a band takes roughly eight to twelve weeks of consistent work. A full band takes about three months. If your test is in two weeks, work on exam technique rather than trying to raise your English level, because the level will not move that fast.

Where most Dubai candidates lose marks is speaking and writing, not reading and listening. Reading and listening reward practice you can do alone. Speaking and writing need someone to tell you what is wrong, which is the part that does not improve from doing more mock tests by yourself.
