Your daughter was born in Dubai. She’s eight, she’s fluent in English, she watches everything in English, and when her grandmother calls from Lucknow the conversation lasts about ninety seconds before it switches. You speak Hindi at home. She understands most of it. She answers in English.<\/p>\n

This is one of the most common things Indian parents in the UAE describe to us, and it isn’t a discipline problem or a laziness problem. It’s structural, and it’s fixable, but not by hoping.<\/p>\n

Why Hindi slips here even in Hindi-speaking homes<\/h2>\n

Children learn the language they need. In the UAE, a child’s entire functional world runs in English: school, friends, playground, screens, the mall, the doctor. Hindi occupies one room in the house and one phone call a week.<\/p>\n

What happens next is predictable. First the child becomes a passive bilingual, understanding everything and producing nothing. Then production gets harder because it’s unpractised, so they avoid it, so it gets harder still. By eleven or twelve, many kids can follow a family conversation completely and can’t sustain one.<\/p>\n

Reading and writing go earlier, and more quietly. A child raised in the UAE has usually had no reason to learn Devanagari at all, because nothing in their environment is written in it.<\/p>\n

The decision that forces the issue: second language in CBSE<\/h2>\n

For most Indian families here, this arrives as a school form. CBSE schools in the UAE typically ask families to choose a second language, commonly Hindi or French, around the end of primary. The choice looks administrative. It isn’t.<\/p>\n

What catches parents out is that the Hindi taught as a CBSE second language from Class 6 assumes a foundation your UAE-raised child may not have. It moves quickly into grammar, comprehension and written Devanagari. A child who speaks conversational Hindi at home but has never read it can find themselves behind within a term, which is exactly when a confident child starts saying they hate Hindi.<\/p>\n

Note also that UAE schools teach Arabic under Ministry of Education requirements, so your child may be handling Arabic alongside whichever second language you pick. Ask your school directly what applies to your child’s grade and stream before you decide anything.<\/p>\n

The honest summary: Hindi is the better choice if you’re willing to support the script, and the worse choice if you aren’t. Plenty of families pick Hindi assuming home fluency will carry it, then spend Class 8 in crisis tuition. If you’d rather your child had a clean start in a language nobody in the family speaks, French for kids<\/a> is a perfectly reasonable answer.<\/p>\n

What doesn’t work is choosing Hindi for identity reasons and then treating it as the easy option.<\/p>\n

These are three different goals and they need different amounts of work. Be clear which one you’re buying.<\/p>\n
